Match 1:
Team: Reece, Ryan, Ben, Harry, Robert, Warren, Charlie, Zak, Sophie, Kai
The match against Waterloo started as a fairly even contest. Robert pushed down the rights hand side to mount the first attack. Then pressure came from Waterloo with 2 corners which Mossley defended well. On the counter, Robert was the first to shoot on goal but the ball was deflected wide. A corner taken by Ben gave no result. Next Waterloo pressed forward and scored despite some frantic defending . The first half finished with another shot from Robert that was again deflected wide of the goal.
At the start of the second half the heavens opened, the spectators raised their brollies, but the team were drenched by an icy cold shower. After a slow start Waterloo pushed forward and some luckless defending led to Waterloo goal. Next, a foul gave Mossley a good chance with a free kick near to goal that was taken by Zak. This was followed by a corner to Mossley that the boys failed to capitalise on. A warning of what was to come came with a Waterloo shot across the front of the Mossley goal. Soon after Waterloo pressed forward and scored their third. Then Mossley had one of their best spells of the match earning two corners that were taken by Zak, the ball fell to Ben and his volley went over the bar. On the Waterloo counter, Sophie tracked back and defended well. Next, Kai slid a good ball through to Zak who mounted a decent attack towards goal. Time was running out for Mossley. Waterloo regained their composure and mounted several attacks which Reece resisted twice with a kick outside of his area and then a save. Finally Waterloo’s no. 9 slotted the ball just inside the post to make it 4. An unfortunate result and score line that flattered Waterloo.
Final score: Mossley Juniors 0 Waterloo 4.
Match 2:
Team: Elias, Ashley, Jaydan, Robbie, Jack, Sam, Olly.
After patiently waiting in the icy cold wind and rain the boys were glad to get on the pitch and soon impressed with a strong start. This was to be one of their most convincing performances of the season so far. The team pressed forward and Jack had the first attempt that was well saved by the Waterloo keeper. It wasn’t long till Olly interchanged passes with Jack, and Olly fired home a well worked goal. Sam then had a chance, shooting across the Waterloo goal. Next Sam shot high and the keeper made a finger tip save to push the ball on to the cross bar, the ball dropped to Olly whose shot hit the post then crossed to Robbie who just didn’t meet the fast paced ball to make the goal. The boys were gaining confidence and a great passing move started with Robbie passing wide to Jack who crossed to Olly to hit the shot which was saved, but the ball dropped kindly to Olly who buried the ball in the net to make it 2. Next another attack and shot from Olly was saved. Another probing run from Robbie and pass for Olly to cross that was cleared by the Waterloo defence.
The boys made a forceful start again in the second half. Jaydan played well in defence and Waterloo struggled to test Elias in any meaningful way other than a shot that met with a great clearance off the goal line by Robbie. Ashley held strong under pressure to pass through to Olly to mount the first Mossley attack. A chance then came to Ashley with a shot just wide. Shorty after, another shot from Ashley was fumbled by the keeper and Olly nipped in to poach his hat trick goal! Mossley dominated the game and next an Ashley free kick flashed wide of the post. Olly broke forward using his pace to draw a foul. Ashley took charge and drove the resulting free kick hard and low past the keeper to make it 4 for Mossley. The last effort on goal came from a Sam header just wide of the post. A confident performance and well deserved win for Mossley.
