After a rest week, Mossley were back in action against Signol Athletic U11’s this Saturday. Signol are the division’s pacesetters who went into the game boasting a 100% record in the league and they were probably confident of extending that, especially having dished out a 9-4 defeat to Mossley as recently as 4 weeks ago. Mossley had shown their opponents a bit too much respect then though and were also missing a recognised goalkeeper which didn’t help. After a good training session on Wednesday the Mossley players went into this match motivated and determined to give a good account of themselves.

 1st Half
- Mossley force an early corner following Harrison’s long ball forward. Signol defend well though and launch a counter-attack but as has been the case all season so far, James is there with some good defending to halt their progress.
- Joe in an unfamiliar defensive role gets an important foot to the ball.
- Mossley attack as Charlie finds Jacob on the left, he crosses into the box but Signol manage to clear.
- Harrison battles away determinedly on the right.
- Joe then hits a long cross into the danger zone which the Signol keeper struggles with, the ball is knocked out to Jacob whose shot is blocked. Good start this from Mossley.
- More good Mossley play as Joe throws to Harrison who finds Charlie who in turn passes to Jacob.Â
- Good skills on the left from Jacob help him retain possession despite the attentions of three defenders.
- Ciaran F sends Jacob off down the left again with a good pass.
- There is yet more good passing from Mossley, as Joe feeds Charlie who finds Harrison who in turn finds Reece. Mossley continue to look the better team.
- Signol respond on the counter but Joe, James and Ciaran F defend as a unit and hold firm.
- James then hits a cracking long-ranger that looks like it may drop in but the Signol keeper does well to tip it over the bar.
- Reece receives Jacob’s pass and gets a shot away but it is again saved by Signol’s goalie.
- Signol go on the offensive again but once more James is there and defends well.
- Following a Signol corner, Charlie finds Reece who runs over half the length of pitch before being tackled in the left corner. Great run.
- Ciaran Mc receives Jacob’s throw and turns brilliantly but he is unable to fashion a shot at goal.
- The ball is acrobatically hooked clear by Ciaran F as Signol come forward again.
- A Mossley corner from Sean finds Ciaran Mc who sees his effort cleared off the line. So close.
- Charlie then finds Ciaran Mc, who again gets a shot away but this time the keeper makes a good stop.
- Mossley really are playing well and are enjoying an excellent spell as a great move sees Ciaran F link with Ciaran Mc who knocks it on to Jacob whose cross is inches away from an unmarked Sean who had ghosted into the box.
- Typically, after Mossley have made most of the running, Signol play their way into the box and earn a PENALTY following a trip on their attacker. The Signol captain steps up but Yves dives to his right and not only makes the stop but holds onto the ball as well. PENALTY SAVED. Brilliant.
- Determined play by Ciaran Mc sees him dispossess a Signol defender before passing to Joe.
- It is now end-to-end stuff as Signol look to have broken though but Charlie gets back to make a brilliant last-ditcher to thwart their attacker.
- It’s Signol’s turn to enjoy some possession although a long ball out of defence from Jacob helps relieve the pressure briefly.
- James then makes yet another good challenge.
- Signol carve Mossley open for the first time, getting in on their right but the shot is fired agonisingly wide.
- They then attack down the left flank as their winger makes a great run into the box but he is denied as Yves gets down well to make the save.
- Signol continue to press but a tackle from Jacob and then some good reading of the play by James helps Mossley to hold firm.
- Yves finds Joe with a goalkick as Mossley sweep upfield and earn a corner.
- Jacob takes it short to Sean who rifles a goal -of-the season contender into the far corner from wide out on the right. 1-0 to MOSSLEY.
- Signol look shocked and Mossley inspired as Charlie sets up Ciaran Mc who sees his shot saved as Mossley look to instantly double their advantage.
- They don’t have to wait long though as Jacob’s lob into the box is brought under control by Ciaran Mc who fires it past the keeper and into the net for 2-0 to MOSSLEY. Unbelievable.
- Yet more good Mossley play as Sean, Olivia and Joe link-up.
- Signol then attack before Ciaran Mc breaks clear only to see his cross-shot saved.
- James makes another tackle before Sean clears as Mossley continue to look solid in defence.
- Ciaran F finds Joe who shows neat skills to make good ground down the right.
- Mossley fashion another chance as Jacob finds Ciaran Mc whose ball enables Joe to shoot at goal but the Signol goalie makes the stop.
- As the half nears its end, Sean makes an important block whilst Ciaran Mc harries and chases down the Signol defenders.
- HALFTIME.
2nd Half
- Jacob and Reece link-up before Charlie and Reece do likewise.
- There is then some good play on the right by Joe as Mossley look to continue from where they left off in the first half.
- Yves is soon called into action though as Signol break through but he makes a great save to help preserve Mossley’s advantage.
- Signol are probing but Mossley’s defence, which has been excellent, is again well served by James and then Joe who are biting into the tackles.
- Yves, Sean and Charlie then combine well.
- Joe makes another good tackle as Signol come forward again before Sean finds Charlie who in turn releases Reece who shoots inches wide.
- Incredible commitment again from Joe who makes another great tackle to deny Signol.
- From defence to attack as a Signol corner is headed away by Jacob to Ciaran F who then releases Reece with a terrific ball.
- Olivia is battling away in midfield as the tackles fly about.
- Sean does well on the right with a skilful run.
- Moments later, Sean delivers the ball into the box before Reece aka ‘the bulldozer’ smacks the ball past the keeper to make it three. 3-0 to MOSSLEY.
- Mossley continue to attack and after Jacob is released down the left he puts a delightful cross in to Sean who slips at the vital moment and can’t get his shot away.
- Signol go direct but Yves anticipates well to gather the ball.
- Olivia gets the ball forward for Mossley.
- Good football as Joe, Jacob and Reece link-up well.
- Olivia feeds Sean who makes a great run down the right before seeing his effort at goal saved.
- Signol again see an attack thwarted by Yves who is quickly off his line to gather the ball.
- Joe, Harrison and Olivia exchange passes as Mossley play keep-ball.
- Another Signol attack is ended by Yves who pounces on the ball.
- Harrison then finds Ciaran Mc who displays good skills up-front.
- Ciaran Mc then receives Jacob’s throw before finding Harrison in the box, there is a scramble, culminating in a shot from Ciaran Mc which is saved.
- Yet more good football as Ciaran F’s throw finds Ciaran Mc who exchanges passes with Olivia.
- Another dangerous cross from Jacob causes Signol problems but they manage to get the ball clear.
- Mossley still have to defend though and they do so excellently, as Joe, who is having a stormer makes another well-timed challenge.
- Ciaran F who is also having a great game then reads the play well as he mops up at the back.
- Yves again comes off his line quickly to gather the ball before Joe makes a vital defensive header.
- Ciaran F then throws to Ciaran Mc who finds his captain Olivia with a pass.
- Charlie then hits a lovely through-ball to release Jacob who gets into the box before unleashing a goalbound shot which the Signol keeper does well to get his hand to.
- Great run by Ciaran Mc.
- Signol continue to try and make a breakthrough but Mossley have given them very little as James again covers well to intercept.
- Signol then swing a good cross over but there is nobody on the end of it and the ball goes out to safety.
- Joe finds Ciaran Mc who in turn finds Jacob and following his cross, Ciaran Mc almost makes it four but his effort is cleared off the line.
- The Signol captain and dangerman has had Charlie in his face all game and the Mossley man makes another excellent sliding challenge to stop him in his tracks for the umpteenth time.
- More commitment shown by Mossley as Olivia makes a good tackle.
- Joe sends Harrison away down the right, he beats one defender with some neat skill but Signol manage to stop him before he can get a cross in.
- Charlie makes another trademark sliding challenge to win the ball.
- There is yet more good defending from Mossley as first Ciaran F and then Charlie do really well to thwart Signol following a corner.
- Mossley add a fourth as the Signol keeper can only clear to Ciaran Mc who passes to Charlie enabling him to dispatch the ball into the back of the net despite the goalie’s best efforts. 4-0 to MOSSLEY.
- The game is almost over but there is still time for a determined header by James and a brave save by Yves who comes out to block at an attacker’s feet and ensure the clean sheet is intact.

WOW! What a performance. I don’t think Signol could believe what hit them in this match as a pumped up Mossley spoilt their perfect record with a display of energy, intensity, determination, courage and skill. Definitely a season highlight as every player was magnificent in helping to shut out a team that had scored 66 goals in their 8 league games prior to this match. Not only that, Mossley scored four, could have had more and showed just what they are capable of against very strong opposition. Credit to Signol and their coaches who gracefully acknowledged that the better side had won on this occasion whilst Mossley’s coaches and parents went away feeling a bit shocked themselves but very proud of what they had just witnessed. Fantastic.
